Should You Make A Website? Here’s Why Keanu Reeves Did.

Known for offering a variety of plans for a variety of businesses, Squarespace banks on “value for money” factor and offers four plans which are:

  1. Personal
  2. Business
  3. Basic Commerce
  4. Advanced Commerce

Lets begin with the basics – Squarespace does not offer a free plan, however, there is a 14-day free trial to explore the platform. After which you will have to upgrade your account to any of its paid plans.

Now let’s discuss how much a Squarespace account would cost you, and which plan suits you the best as per your requirement.

Squarespace Cost

1.   Personal Plan ($16 per month)

This plan is the most inexpensive plan on the list. It is specifically designed to fulfil the very basic requirements of website building.

Who uses this plan? Generally, the users who need a personal website to start a blog or showcase artwork use this particular plan. This plan includes amazing templates.

You would not be able to sell anything with this plan however. That simply means building an online store is not possible with this plan. For that particular reason, you have to choose from one of the other plans.

With this plan, you can connect to the free custom domain. What is the custom domain? A domain that you create based on your business brand name and available options. That means you can have a website that looks like this: “yourbusinessname.com” (could be .net, .edu or .co., etc)

This plan also includes SSL security. That means your confidential information is secured.

It also offers unlimited bandwidth and storage. You can upload as many photos and videos as you want.

Moreover, it would give you access to the advanced SEO tools to help you rank your website high on Google and other search engines. You can also add 2 contributors to your Squarespace account. This way two people can work on the under-construction website.

Other features include:

  • Mobile Responsive Website (Your website can be accessed and used through any device)
  • 24/7 Customer Support
  • Basic Website Metrics (Helps you understand visitor behaviour)
  • Squarespace Extensions (Can integrate third-party extensions into your site)

The plan would cost you $16 per month. However, you can get a discount of $4 per month if you make the payment on an annual basis. So, overall you would be able to save $48 in a year.

2.   Business Plan ($26 per month)

The business plan is the most popular plan among Squarespace millions of users. That could be because it offers a lot of value/features for a reasonable price.

The business plan is not a full-fledged ecommerce plan, however, you can sell your products with this plan. This plan seems perfect for small businesses and entrepreneurs.

This plan includes all the features of the personal plan. However, unlike the personal plan, you can add unlimited contributors to your website with this plan.

The Business plan offers a free business Gmail and G suite account.

What does that mean? Generally you get a Gmail account that looks like this: “yourname@gmail.com”; however, G suite account email address (custom email address) would look like this: “yourname@domainname.com”. The plan would offer only one custom email address though. In case you need more than one custom email address, you will need to purchase it on standard rates.

Unlike the personal plan, this plan lets you customize your website through coding. You will be getting the facility of premium integrations and the ability to sell on Instagram.

Marketing Features

Unlike the personal plan, the business plan will give you access to advanced website analytics. You would be able to get the information about your visitors’ geography, the site path, popular content and much more. You can also get analytics related to sales and conversion of your website.

Other marketing benefits include:

  • Promotional pop-ups and banners (Promote your website or make announcements through banners)
  • $100 Google Adwords Credits

E-Commerce Features

It has a fully integrated e-commerce platform. You can sell unlimited products, physical as well as digital. Moreover, you will be having the option of accepting donations.

However, if you decide to subscribe to this plan, be mindful of the fact that Squarespace would charge a 3% transaction fee. Some may find it quite steep as Shopify charges a 2% transaction fee and some other website builders do not charge any transaction fee on any of their plans.

Overall, this plan would cost you $26 per month. Just like the personal plan, you can also get a discount on this plan by paying annually. If you pay annually you can reduce your per month cost to $18 and save $96 in a year.

3.   Basic Commerce Plan ($30 per month)

Basic commerce plan is designed to establish a successful online store. It includes all the possible mandatory online store features.

Besides the above-mentioned features, it also facilitates “Point of Sale”. That means you can sell your products in person and sync the inventory, sales and customers information with your Squarespace online store account. Moreover, unlike the Business plan, there is no transaction fee.

This plan would also allow your customers to create an account that would facilitate them with faster checkout and you can track your particular customer’s purchases over time. That would help you target them strategically and make long term relationships with them.

Unlike the previous two, this plan allows you to checkout on the same domain that helps to build the customers’ trust.

You can also access analytics on your best selling products, latest sales trends and how the visitors are converting into your customers.

This plan also enables you to display related products to your customers that help you in cross-selling the products. This is possible because of its powerful merchandising tool.

You can also sync your products with Facebook catalogue to increase their reach and sell them.

This plan would cost you $30 per month. This month-to-month payment can be reduced to $26 per month if you pay annually. That means you can save $48 per year by paying annually.

4.   Advanced Commerce Plan ($46 per month)

The advanced business plan is designed specifically for your larger-scale or growing online store.

It includes all the features of the Basic Commerce Plan and extra e-commerce features that facilitate your rapidly growing online business.

These extra features are:

Abandoned Cart Recovery Helps you send follow-up emails to visitors who added products into their carts but did not checkout
Gift Cards Just like other gift cards, it allows redeeming of the digital gift cards. Allow your visitors to give away gifts from your online store
Sell Subscription You can sell subscriptions through your website if you purchase this plan. That means you can sell digital products as well as offer your services
Advanced Shipping Advanced Shipping calculates the real-time shipping charges of FedEx, UPS, USPS, which is not possible with the simple shipping option
Advanced Discounts Advanced Discounts are discounts which automatically apply to the qualified orders when the visitor checks out. That helps visitors to avail the discounts if they forget or don’t apply discount codes manually
Commerce APIs This feature would allow you to have a custom integration to manage your back office and other e-commerce requirements
Limited Availability Labels This feature would show the number of items left in the stock to your online store visitor. That helps create urgency among visitors to grab the product before its sold out

This plan would cost you $46 per month. However, if you can afford to pay a lump sum amount annually, then you would pay $40 per month (you save $6 per month or $72 annually). This is only when you pay annually.

5.   Is Squarespace Free?

Unlike Wix, Weebly, and IM Creator, Squarespace does not offer a free plan. So, if you are looking for an entirely free website builder, Squarespace is not meant for you. The best freemium plan is being offered by IM Creator which does not show ads.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Buck

1.   Make Yearly Payments

As explained earlier, you can save a lot by paying yearly, instead of paying monthly. For example, in the advanced commerce plan, you have the option of making a lump sum payment of $480 (annually) which is a saving of $72. If, however, you were paying monthly, you would end up paying $552 by the end of the year. But making a lump sum payment is not for everyone and therefore your budget would determine whether you will be able to avail this offer.

The annual payment option would suit those who intend to stay with Sqaurespace for at least a year, if not longer. However, if your intention is to switch to another website builder within a year then definitely the yearly payment option would cost you a lot.

2.   Domain Name

Beware – there are many website builders which claim to offer “Free Domain Name”. In reality, it’s not exactly the case. What they are offering is free domain name but only for the first year. The second year of your subscription will have you pay $20 (for the entire year) for the domain name.

Instead, you’ll be better off registering your domain name on NameCheap. So, in short, enjoy the first year’s free domain and then move to NameCheap.

3.   Email Address

You get a professional email address with Business, Basic Commerce and Advanced Commerce plans. However, just like the domain name, it also comes free for the first year only and for one user. For the second year, you will have to make a payment of $6 per month to get the email address for one user. This makes your website costly on a per month basis.
However, to save money, you can get the email address through NameCheap.
You can also try Zoho Workplace, that would cost you as much as G Suite; however, the limit of users would be 5.

4.   SquarespaceTransaction Fee

Squarespace Business plan charges a 3% transaction fee. That means Squarespace deducts 3% of the total bill including the shipping charges just to process a transaction. However, if you go with any of the e-commerce plans, Squarespace would not charge any transaction fee as these plans are already expensive comparatively.

Conclusion:

So if you want to start a blog or showcase your artwork to the world, the Personal Plan would be the perfect plan for you. However, bear this in mind that you would not be able to sell through this plan. The plan would cost you $16 per month or less.

If you want to showcase your artwork or talent and sell it through your website at a smaller scale, you must consider the Business Plan. However, Squarespace charges a 3% transaction fee. This plan would cost you $26 per month or less.

If you are planning to launch a small online business, then you should consider the Basic Commerce plan. This plan would cost you $30 per month or less and there is no transaction fee.

If you want to establish a large scale business or your small scale business is growing, you can shift your plan to the Advanced Commerce plan. This plan offers a lot of really good e-commerce features such as Abandoned Cart Recovery, Advanced Shipping, Advanced Discounts, Limited Availability Labels, etc. This plan would cost you $46 per month or less.
